World biggest coffee morning for Macmillan:
You are cordially invited to attend our cake and coffee morning from 10am – 12pm on Friday the 30th September. We will be rising money for Macmillan cancer support but we ensure our donation goes to the local unit at Trafford general, The Trafford Macmillan Wellbeing Centre. We have hosted this event for several years here at Thomas Carter Opticians but we also ensure we make it a gathering to remember for all who attend. We have our super prize raffle at a £1 a ticket and all proceeds and other donations go to the charity pot.
The TCO bake-off:
We have been doing somewhat of an informal baking game for the last few years of our Macmillan event and this September is all about The Cake! We will be having our very own TCO Bake off competition and our local Mp Kate Green is coming to judge for us! The winner will receive bragging rights and also have to make their cake for all our other party occasions or whimsical staff request until next year.
Urmston scarecrow festival:
Urmston has been haunted this September by Scarecrows! There have been some brilliant and inspired masterpieces from residents and local business alike and it’s been oodles of fun to see them all. Urmston Partnerships Facebook page has a stash of photos, and not only can you see the entries but you can have a good giggle at them all too.
Here is our very own masterpiece. It is Yvette from ‘Allo Allo’ who has popped over from France with her Cafe Rene & TCO menu, to tell you all about our Macmillan coffee morning event on Fri 30th September. She has been inviting everyone that goes by so be sure to come in between 10am – 12pm for a chance at some cake.
National Eye Health week:
It’s National Eye Health Week from Monday 19th – Sunday 25th September. #eyeweek
NEHW is all about reminding everyone to look out for their family members and themselves. There are shocking numbers of people out there without tippity-top eyesight and although they may not be aware their vision is not 20/20, It a concern for drivers, commuters, children everywhere!
No child should be held back in their education from compromised vision.
No drivers should be a danger to others with illegal eyeballs.
Anyone jumping on the wrong bus, or flagging them all down until theirs arrives is in need of help too.
The health of the eye is just as important as the vision they give us everyday. Call us on 01617475555 or pop in to discuss your vision and book an appointment.

The TCO girls bravely went where no TCO girl has gone before…Into a room, a room with a lock, and a code needed to get out!
We went for a celebratory team-building outing to Code2Exit in Altrincham. It was great fun and we would recommend to everyone of appropriate age to take part. We took so many people with us we had to split into 2 teams.
No spoilers here, but we all escaped within the hour given to us to get out. There were no clear winners…none!…not one of the teams technically made it out before the other…
Okay, Maybe one team did technically make it out before the others. But they also asked for clues 🙂
Ray Ban exhibition and Birthday weekend:
In Feb 2016 we decided to host an event with Ray Ban. We provided nibbles and fizz and played host to the entire stock of Ray Ban sunglasses and ophthalmic frames. It was a great party that tied in with it being our 9th birthday!
We made sure anyone ordering a pair of Ray Ban frames received 10% discount so that the birthday celebrations could be enjoyed by all.
Richards Cakes of Urmston provided some delicious and beautifully made cupcakes for us to give away.
Christmas Competition 2015, The Window display and the winners!
Another year of wonderful and festive efforts. A huge ‘Thank you’ goes out to all the children and family members who got involved in our community Christmas competition. Choosing the winners was tricky and we had such a hard decision to make, the efforts by all were brilliant and Olaf wanted to have them all!
The winners pictures are on display below and so is our ‘Spec’tacular Christmas window display!
Well Done everybody!!!
Christmas Competition 2015

We have prizes for the category winners and runners up, and all the entries are used for our December window display until Christmas. We really love how the children of Urmston community and the local schools get involved.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
On the 25th September we hosted our annual Macmillan coffee morning. There was plenty of tea/coffee and cakes for us all to share, and we held a raffle with numerous prizes. Our staff compete a little with a Bake-Off the night before to give us a huge cake selection for the day and we even had one kind patient drop some in that she had made!
Thanks to you we managed to raise nearly £400!
Frozen Launch Day:
On sat 4th of July we took to the Centre of Urmston to bring a Frozen delight to local families and children. Whilst enjoying the warm weather, people of Urmston was visited by Queen Elsa, Princess Anna And Olaf the Snowman! To celebrate our launch of little girls fashion frames featuring Disney’s frozen characters a few of our team members got in costume and strolled around Eden square handing out hugs, balloons and Teddy Testing leaflets out to people of all ages.
We have some pictures that captured the day on our Facebook page and If you took any of your own feel free to post them on our page. We know plenty of you took some great photo’s!
Teddy Testing days and Nursery visits:
Teddy Testing is all about starting young with health care awareness and about how we need not be afraid of eye tests or visits to the local opticians. We have already been out to local nurseries to give talks and let the children play with putting spectacles on their teddy bears and learning a bit more about eyes and being healthy. We will be having a day in practice too on Sat 28th so bring your little ones along to let them see their favourite cuddly toys have an eye test and see what it’s all about.
Good News for our Urmston superstar:
We had some fantastic news passed our way by one proud mum. We are all super pleased to know that Mitch Sutton is doing great after his surgery and his mum kindly lent us a couple of pics.
The first picture is of Mitch giving us a ‘thumbs up’ for how much better he is doing and it’s hard to grasp how life changing Mitch’s surgery has been, He looks just like any other healthy, happy, young lad, and that’s how it should be !
The second picture shows a ‘before’ and ‘after surgery’ scan of Mitch’s brain. The left scan shows the tumour on the left side of the central area in a grey round blob shape and also how swollen everything was. The right scan shows the brain with all the swelling reduced and the very white area is healthy fluid in the area that had been under surgery.
Mitch had complained of headaches and other symptoms and signs were picked up that something wasn’t quite right during a routine eye examination. He was referred to specialists by our Optometrist, Claire Thomas-Carter. Mitch was later diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent surgery to save his life.
He has recovered fantastically and he is such a character! He always makes us smile and has us all laughing when he’s visits us and it’s so great to see him doing so well. We asked Mitch how he was doing on his last visit. “My head’s really itchy” he told us, his hair growing back over his surgery scar needs a really good scratch every now and then. We are so proud of this young man for what he has endured.
April and May for most Opticians means Trade Fairs! And none get more excited than we do. We get to see new and amazing frame styles, catwalk modelling with designer brands, upcoming and experimental fashions from around the world, new technology for eye care, see how modern research is developing the way we can care for you.
We have taken on (just a few) new lines of frames and we will be hosting an event in July for young children to see some of their favourite Disney characters, here in Urmston.
Eye test saves the life of a 9 year old boy from Urmston:
You may have read recently in the Urmston Messenger about a brave young man called Mitch Sutton,9. Mitch had been quite ill and unusually ill for a boy of his age with sickness and headaches and by coming for an Eye test a rare condition was diagnosed and life saving surgery performed.
Mitch had an eye test in 2014 and our resident Optometrist Claire Thomas-Carter noticed something irregular during a retinal investigation and referred him for a more in depth look into the situation.
Frustratingly it took a while for the system to serve Mitch justice, but eventually he was diagnosed with brain tumour and life saving surgery means he can go on being a normal 9 year old boy again.
He has been telling people who ask that his scars are from ‘a shark bite-attack’ and he has very happily been able to get back to school.
He is a real inspiration and his outgoing, bubbly personality and along with his wicked sense of humour , He is a real superstar. We are so proud of Mitch for what he’s been through.
This February , on the 26th we celebrated 8 years as Thomas Carter Opticians with some yummy cupcakes from local cake wizards at Richards Cakes of Urmston and a cheeky glass of fizz! 8 years of the TCO team taking care of patients has flown by and we are busier than ever and all thanks to you! we see so many people who have been recommended by others to come to us and it really does mean so much to us. So Thanks so much everyone for your love and support! We promise that the 10year anniversary will be a big birthday bash with invites to come and share some giggles with us. No doubt those 2 years between now and then will fly too!
- Our Annual Christmas Competition was another huge success with Thanks to the participating children of Urmston’s local schools, All the children who enter into our competition get a certificate that is given out in their school and we always award prizes to winners of each category: Key stages 1,2 &3 (visit our Facebook page to see the full album with all the pictures of the handmade entries, and the winners getting their prizes and certificates from Santa!).
- We always try to make our event Eco-friendly by asking for all items to be made out of recycled materials – the more recycled they are, The Better! This years theme was recycled Christmas cards and here is a picture of our window to show off the handy work of all the kids. We always have a showy window display every month, but our December window is all about Christmas and community spirit and we simply love showing off the efforts of the local children. Thank you again to all who contributed.
Food Bank Donation:
- This year our Team decided that rather than give each other Christmas Cards we would donate to Stretford Food Bank. We raised £40 between us to aid those in need of help with financial difficulty, at a time of year that should be a festive as possible.
