Many children are comfortable wearing spectacles and some actively enjoy the opportunity to accessorise with them. That said , some feel self-conscious and can find they interfere with everyday activities such as sport or active play.
For adults contact lenses have long been a solution or alternative to spectacle wear, however concerns about eye health and hygiene have discouraged use in younger patients in the past.
These concerns have now been addressed and the current generation of lenses allow for longer wear times with improved comfort. Children are also fantastically good at learning and very quickly adapt to change or new concepts (unlike adults who can take quite some time to get used to the idea).
For periodic use such as for sport, the daily disposable contact lenses are recommended. There are no cleaning routines to follow and if the lens is lost (say in a pool or a scrum) the cost is minimal. For more proactive lens users we find a Monthly replacement lens works better for cost and comfort reasons but there is more care required as the lenses must be cleaned before and after use each time they are worn.
